CATRACT

What Is Cataract ?

Cataracts are a prevalent eye condition marked by the clouding of the normally transparent lens in the eye. This cloudiness can make vision resemble looking through a fogged or frosted window. Such visual impairment can interfere with daily tasks like reading, night driving, or identifying facial expressions. Cataracts usually progress gradually and may not cause noticeable vision problems in their early stages.

Due to significant medical and surgical advancements in recent years, cataract surgery has become one of the safest, most effective, and sophisticated medical procedures available. The Cataract Clinic at DEVKUNJ EYE HOSPITAL is renowned for its expertise in cataract surgery.Successful treatment can dramatically improve your vision, making it clearer, brighter, and sharper than it has been in years. This is a convenient day-care procedure, typically requiring no more than an hour at the surgery center. Most routine activities, such as walking, reading, and watching TV, can be resumed as early as the day after surgery.

What Causes Cataract ?

Cataracts are caused by a buildup of proteins in the eye’s lens, which can lead to blurred vision and eventually blindness. The most common cause of cataracts is aging, but other factors that can increase your risk include:

  • Genetics: Having a family history of cataracts can increase your likelihood of developing the condition.
  • Health conditions: Diabetes and other health issues can increase your risk of cataracts.
  • Lifestyle: Smoking, drinking too much alcohol, and spending time in the sun without wearing sunglasses can increase your risk.
  • Medications: Long-term use of corticosteroids and other medications can contribute to cataract formation.
  • Trauma: Eye injuries can sometimes lead to the development of cataracts.
  • Radiation: Radiation treatment for cancer or other diseases can increase your risk of cataracts.

Symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Clouded, blurred or dim vision.
  • Trouble seeing at night.
  • Sensitivity to light and glare.
  • Need for brighter light for reading and other activities.
  • Seeing “halos” around lights.
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription.
  • Fading or yellowing of colors.
  • Double vision in one eye.

Treatment :

Cataracts are treated with surgery to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear artificial lens. Cataract surgery is one of the most common and safest surgical procedures.
There are different types of cataract surgery, including:

  • Small incision cataract surgery
The most common type, where a small incision is made in the cornea and a probe uses ultrasound waves to break up the lens.
  • Extracapsular cataract extraction
An older technique that involves making a larger incision in the cornea or sclera to remove the lens in one piece.
  • Laser cataract surgery
Also known as femto-phako, this procedure uses a femtosecond laser to partially break down the cataract.

Cataract surgery is performed while you are awake, and you will be given a calming medication, numbing gel, and eye drops. The surgery is quick, taking between 30-60 minutes.
